#064 02/11/14- Obsessions (Alpha City #1), Bryce Evans
**I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal) Goodreads.com**
This was a fantastic book by an already fairly established author, it is the first book I’ve read by this author however it will by no means be my last. Since finishing this book I have looked into other books by this author with the intention of reading them in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book mainly because of the fantastic characters and the rich background information we were given about them.
The main characters are Zoey, London and Ryder; Zoey and Ryder are siblings who are both wolf shifters living in a city specially designed for people with the ability to shift into other animals. London comes into the story as Zoey’s college roommate; she helps Zoey overcome her bully’s by teaching her to stand up for herself- in doing this London cements herself as a big part of Zoey’s life. When Ryder investigates his brother’s roommate at college he does not expect to be faced with an image of his mate but that is what happens. I loved these three characters that were each facing their very own individual problems, as they came together in what I thought was a great way when they all came to live together in Alpha City. That’s when I felt these characters really hit their stride, London at this point had suffered the stresses of working in a big corporate company which cared little about its employees, Ryder had spent years trying to hide how he felt about London and Zoey I felt had fallen back into the step of being a small and a bit weak beside her big badass alpha brother. London was by far my favourite character out of the three main characters; this is because I absolutely love a strong and opinionated female character.
The secondary characters I felt were noteworthy include Me-Len, London’s grandmother, Jamie, Ryder’s Beta, Nolan another Alpha and Donnie London’s friend from New York. I loved Me-Len, she was an honest and strong character for London to rely on. Jamie I liked however I found it difficult to understand his reasoning for jumping to conclusions, I would love for this character to be explored further in future as I feel there is a lot more to know about him. Nolan I felt was actually a pretty good fit for London however I ultimately knew he was playing a part in order to push London and Ryder together. And Donnie I felt was a real asset to the story giving Zoey and London a normal person to focus on in the midst of the madness that their lives had become.
The pacing was great however I did feel it was a little rushed towards the end, this did not retract from the reading experience though since it helped to make it more obviously part of a series rather than a standalone book. I liked that it gave lots of time for bonds to be formed between main characters as well as secondary character.
The storyline was similar to other books I’ve read with the major difference of the city being run and managed by shifters meaning that the characters who lived there felt little reason to hide who they really were and making the characters a lot more honest from the start. It is difficult to see however in this situation how this city is so far from the norms of the rest of the country.
A fantastic read, 4 stars.
