#014 26th May 2014: HEART OF WAR- LISA BETH DARLING
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)
I was surprised and amazed by this book; somehow it was not at all what I was expecting, I’m not sure why. It was very much a book of two parts; it really could have been 2 books but I was glad it wasn’t as it offered a great amount of detail and really gave us characters to love.
The two main characters Ares and Alena are stranded on an island, Ares being the God of war and exiled to this island has already established is life on the island when Alena/ Maggie gets stranded there. Ares is a dominant, angry and broody man who has lived on the island long enough for him to establish himself as king (pretty much) he has a sexual relationship with almost all of the women who get stranded on his island. When Alena gets washed up on the island with her chastity belt that Ares can open she brings mystery and a challenge to his authority. Desperate not to let Ares get anywhere near her virginity that had been protected for so long she tries to distance herself from him. However when Ares tells her he’s leaving the island for a short while she goes to him in the hope of changing his mind. The relationship between them goes beyond anything he has felt for any of the other women on the island.
The secondary characters cause both a problem and a solution to the issues brought about by Ares and Alena’s relationship. There are some characters like Kat and Aphrodite who you really can’t help to hate. Whereas Hera and Onya you seriously seriously love, it is the love of the main characters and the people who either support or oppose them that help you love or hate them. I also liked that for all intents and purposes Hades is not actually the worst bad guy in this book.
The pacing was good as you got drawn into the love story and then the action/ war started. I felt emotionally involved in the battle in the second half of the book.
The story line was unique and something that I genuinely felt I’d never read before, which in my opinion is a rare thing since I read a lot of the same genres and the story’s within their genre are similar.
I was honestly amazed and surprised by this book it was not what I was expecting however I thouroughly enjoyed it. A 4.5 star rating for an amazing read.
